11 May 2010

Thanks for your patience guys! For everyone wanting updates, I’ll be doing them myself from now. My updates won’t be daily because, now that I’m out of rehab, my therapy is not keeping my days full of interest.

On the 7th April 2010 I was signed out of Rehabilitation. 106 days after the accident. I went through a second childhood, needing to learn everything again, I discovered who true friends really are and how kind strangers could be with their money and prayers, and finally I learnt that I am who I am thanks to my amazing family.  Having my sister, bothers, parents and Jason always at my side helped me wake up from a coma of 5 to 6 weeks. From waking up until the day I left rehab my family and friends helped me focus on getting better daily, even when my frustration got the better of me. The day I signed out of rehab I walked out, which was amazing because I was wheeled in, and I have to thank the amazing therapist for that.

Since then I have been in Cape Town, living with my dad and stepmom, and getting some fantastic ‘out of home’ rehab.  After some new tests my neuropsychologist has let us know that, other than seeing her every 2 weeks, I don’t need other therapy (like speech or occupational therapy). My physiotherapist has finally got me walking straight, crossing my legs and taking a specialised palliates class!

My right ankle still hurts, especially in this cold weather, and my right arm needs a lot of additional exercising but other than that I am doing so well.  Those of you who made donations to my hospital fund or prayed for my recovery, thank you. Tamsyn, Jody, Lou and the crew from suburban play thank you for hosting “Kicking for Kelly”; all those who took part, it made a huge difference to my recovery. Thanks again to my family and friends; I’m alive, I feel.

X Kel
